Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has disclosed that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is considering fielding former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde, as possible candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
PDP has zoned its ticket for 2027 to the South, and Moro stated that three names have so far come up in discussions within the party as possible contenders to fly its flag in the next general election.
Moro in a television interview, noted that these figures represent part of the pool of leaders from the South that the PDP could look to in its effort to reclaim power at the national level.
He however, stated that the conversation within the party was still ongoing and that the field of potential candidates remained open.
The Minority Leader explained that apart from Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde, there are other qualified Southerners who might be considered as the search for a consensus candidate continues.
Moro also touched on Peter Obi’s past ties with the PDP, reminding the public that Obi left the party ahead of the 2023 election due to what he described as perceived injustice and unfair treatment.
He pointed out that now that the presidential ticket has been zoned to the South, there may be room for Obi to return and participate in the contest under the PDP platform.
According to him, Obi’s popularity and political base could not be ignored, especially given his strong performance during the last election.
He stressed that Obi, alongside the others mentioned, had qualities that could make him a strong contender if he decides to rejoin the PDP fold and contest under its banner.
Moro said also said former President Jonathan’s past experience in leadership places him in a position where he cannot be overlooked in discussions about the party’s presidential ticket.
As for Governor Seyi Makinde, he was described as a young and vibrant leader from the South-West whose rising profile has attracted attention within the PDP and beyond.
While no official decision has been taken, Moro’s comments indicate that the PDP is already engaging in early planning for 2027.
The mention of these names signals the party’s interest in presenting a strong Southern candidate as it seeks to return to power at the federal level after years in opposition.
Said he, “Peter Obi you are from the South, left PDP because of the perceived injustice and unfair treatment, now that the thing has been zoned to the South you are welcome to join the race.”
