Former President Goodluck Jonathan has opened up on his political journey, and said he was betrayed by political associates and supporters in 2015 presidential election.
Jonathan was Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, but lost a reelection in 2015, the first incumbent president in the nation’s history to lose election to opposition.
The former president who spoke at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, said Nigeria politics is about betrayals.
“You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening,” he said, but added Ogiadomhe who was also former deputy governor of Edo State “is somebody who will take a bullet on my behalf.
“He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank. Most other politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank. They will tell you something, the next one hour they are saying another.”
Jonathan expressed concern at what he described as widespread betrayal and dishonesty within Nigeria’s political space.
“I became president, then post-presidency, one of the few friends that can give up their necks for me is Mike,” he said.
The event drew an array of political heavyweights, including former governors Lucky Igbinedion, Professor Osarhiemen Osunbor, Adams Oshiomhole, and Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State.
Former deputy governors Rev. Peter Obadan, Pius Odubu, Marvelous Omobayo, the Chief Judge of Edo State, Daniel Okungbowa, and the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, were also present, as well as a number of traditional rulers.
