Angela Rayner, British Deputy Prime Minister has resigned from her position. She was found guilty of breaching ministerial code by failing to pay the correct tax.
Rayner who resigned on Friday, September 5, 2025, said she deeply regretted her mistake of underpaying property tax on a new home.
Britain’s independent adviser ruled on her case, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer who described her as “trusted colleague and a true friend,” told her there was little he could do to protect her.
Starmer added that he was “very sad to be losing you from the government.”
Rayner, 45, is the eighth, and the most senior appointee to leave Starmer’s team.
Her case is most damaging, after the British leader offered her his full support when she was first accused of avoiding 40,000 pounds ($54,000) in tax on the transaction.
She had said in her letter of resignation to Starter, “I deeply regret my decision to not seek additional specialist tax advice… I take full responsibility for this error.
“Given the findings, and the impact on my family, I have therefore decided to resign.”
Rayner also stepped down as a minister and deputy leader of the Labour Party.
Starmer has suffered the most ministerial resignations, outside government reshuffles, of any prime minister, more than even Boris Johnson in his chaotic period in office.
