
Preparations for the 2025 edition of the annual Akama Oghe Highmass festival have reached advanced stage.
Already various activities have been lined up by Highmass Planning Committee, to make this year’s feast a memorable one.
The event is expected to begin on Friday, August 15, with Highmass Workout/Rally and climaxed on Sunday August 17 with a holy Mass.
The workout which will take participants to about 3-kilometer road walk, starting from EkeUgbo, the Community’s Market Square, and terminating at Iwollo “Nkwusi Kolta”, is mandatory for all the youths in the community. It is a form of fitness exercise , and will commence by 7 AM.
At noon that same day, there will be a Community Security Awareness Workshop at Akama Oghe Civic Center . Security experts will be around to educate the people on important security issues, in view of security challenges in the country.
Saturday, August 16 is the Iwaji, a cultural festival marking the beginning of harvest season in Akama Oghe Community. The Iwaji will be performed by the Igwe-elect, Chief Onyeka Ofordile, at G.T.C field.
Other activities expected to feature during the ceremony, are Ada/Okpara Akama Pageant, as well as the launch of Akama Oghe Website.
On Sunday August 17 is the Highmass proper with a holy Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church.
The festival will climaxed with a novelty football match between Akama Oghe and her neighbouring community, Iwollo.
Highmass or Feast of Assumption, is a remembrance of coming of Christianity to Akama Oghe.
The festival which started in 1919, which is over 100 years ago now, is a commemoration of reception of first holy communion by early converts from the community.
