Enugu Smart Green Schools Project Expands to Oghe Community
Oghe Town, Enugu State, June 24, 2025 — The Enugu Smart Green Schools initiative, a flagship education project launched by Governor Peter Mbah, is set to establish new state-of-the-art schools in the Oghe community, marking a major milestone in the transformation of education across Enugu State. This ambitious program aims to provide Oghe children with modern, technology-driven learning environments that combine academic excellence with cultural preservation.
A Revolutionary Educational Model
The Smart Green Schools project, which will be fully operational by September 2025, covers all 260 political wards in Enugu State, including Oghe. Each school is a ₦1 billion investment, designed to last 100 years, featuring 25 inclusive classrooms equipped with digital whiteboards, internet facilities, and solar power systems. The schools also include science laboratories, medical facilities, and housing quarters for teachers and staff, ensuring a comprehensive and sustainable educational environment
A unique feature of the Smart Green Schools is the integration of a “smart farm” on each campus. This farm serves as a hands-on learning tool to teach students about agriculture’s vital role in sustainable development. Governor Mbah emphasized that this experiential learning component aims to change perceptions about agriculture and instill a deeper understanding of food production among children
Cultural Education and Community Collaboration
OSDA has pledged to collaborate closely with the state government to ensure that the schools incorporate cultural education alongside modern curricula. This partnership seeks to preserve Oghe’s rich traditions by including local history, language, arts, and crafts in the school programs. OSDA leaders believe this approach will foster cultural pride among the youth while equipping them with skills for the future.
Preparing Students for the Future
The Smart Green Schools initiative is more than just infrastructure development; it represents a total educational revolution. The schools incorporate cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence and mechatronics, preparing students for a rapidly changing global economy. The state government is also establishing a training center at the Enugu College of Education, Technical, to produce “smart teachers” proficient in modern teaching methods and technology use
Governor Mbah has highlighted that the Smart Green Schools will provide free, world-class education for children aged 3 to 15, complemented by daily nutritious meals. This holistic approach addresses both educational quality and child welfare, aiming to improve learning outcomes and health simultaneously
Positive Community Reception and Impact
The Oghe community, along with other parts of Enugu State, has warmly welcomed the initiative. Local leaders have praised Governor Mbah’s commitment to revitalizing education and view the Smart Green Schools as a bold intervention that will transform the lives of thousands of children. The project is also expected to stimulate local economies by creating jobs during construction and through ongoing school operations
Looking Ahead
With the pilot Smart Green School already operational in Owo, Nkanu East LGA, enrolling over 800 pupils, the model is set for replication across all wards, including Oghe. By September 2025, approximately 135 Smart Green Schools will be active, with plans to scale up further
This initiative positions Oghe and Enugu State at the forefront of educational innovation in Nigeria, combining technology, sustainability, and cultural heritage to prepare the next generation for success in the 21st century.
