The House of Representatives is to investigate the killing of Ebuka Oke, a member of Eke Security Neighborhood Vigilante Watch, and his wife, on June 29, allegedly by soldiers of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army Enugu.
Three other members of the vigilante group were also injured, when the soldiers, allegedly opened fire on them at close range at Ugwu di Nso.
Member representing Ezeagu/Udi federal constituency of Enugu State Hon. Sunday Umeha, who brought the motion on the floor, requested the house to set up a ad hoc committee to investigate the killing and “punish those found culpable, and prevent such barbaric wanton act.”
Umeha demanded an overhaul of the entire security architecture in state “in line with new Federal Government posture and determination to ensure adequate protection of lives and properties as guaranteed by law.”
He further called for compensation of families of those who lost their lives, as well as payment of hospital expenditures of the injured.
The lawmaker also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to provide relief materials and assistance for victims of gunshot wounds.
The motion was seconded by member representing Port Harcourt II federal constituency of Rivers State.
Hon. Umeha had earlier visited the victims in their hospital beds and promised them remedial actions.
