Reprieve came the way of tinted glass car owners who have not obtained police permit for such to be in their vehicles as police authorities extended the enforcement to October 2.
The enforcement which would have started from August 12, but the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, granted a grace period of 52 days.
Egbetokun in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on August 11, explained that the extension was due to “a significant surge in applications via the official portal” necessitated the extension.
He added that the surge is a reflection of heightened public compliance with the directive.
“In light of this, the force considers it imperative to allow sufficient time for the meticulous scrutiny of applications to ensure that the permit is issued only to eligible and qualified individuals, in line with national security considerations,” Adejobi stated.
He however hoped that the extension would provide room for the continued fine-tuning of verification processes, both digital and physical, to maintain the integrity of the permit system and prevent abuse.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms that the authorised platform for the application remains https://possap.gov.ng and advises citizens to disregard any unofficial channels,” the FPRO added.
There have been allegations of extortion of motorists by some police officers, but Adejobi encouraged members of the public to report such, and other “hidden charges, or unauthorised processing to the appropriate police authorities,” through dedicated hotline.
He assured that the force will remain “committed to balancing public convenience with robust security measures for the safety of all.”
The permit goes of N16,000 per vehicle.
