Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, popularly as “Mama Peace” has spoken against her husband, Goodluck Jonathan running for presidency in 2027.
Jonathan was Nigeria president between 2010 and 2015. He was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when he wanted to return in 2015.
The former president is rumoured to be interested to contest again in 2027.
But his wife who had earlier dismissed her husband re- contesting the office he left about 10 years ago, openly questioned the rationale behind a potential Goodluck Jonathan presidency in 2027, effectively throwing cold water on the aspirations of his supporters.
At a public event in Abuja, Patience stated, “People have been asking me about this 2027 matter. I have to say this: my husband, God has taken you there once; why do you want to go there again?”
This is interpreted as a direct message to both her husband and the political class rallying for his return.
It is also the first time a prominent figure within Jonathan’s inner circle and indeed his immediate family has publicly expressed opposition to a potential bid.
The statement has sparked a frenzy of analysis. Observers are divided on the true motive behind her surprising declaration.
Some see it as a personal, protective stance from a wife who witnessed the immense pressures and tribulations of the presidency firsthand.
The Jonathan administration was a turbulent period, marked by serious security challenges and intense political battles.
A political commentator, Amara Nwosu, said “This sounds less like politics and more like a wife who remembers the toll the job took.
“She is famously loyal and protective of her family. This could be her way of saying, ‘We have served our country, and that chapter is closed.’ She is prioritizing her husband’s well-being over a political comeback.”
Others, however, suspect a deeper, more strategic political calculation. By publicly stating the case against a run, she could be allowing Goodluck Jonathan to remain a dignified, reluctant leader who would only answer a “draft” from the people, thus increasing his perceived value.
